SEN Elizabeth Dole Selected for Thayer Award

WPAOG is pleased to announce The Honorable Elizabeth Dole will receive the 2023 Sylvanus Thayer Award. The Thayer Award will be presented on September 21, at West Point. The Sylvanus Thayer Award is given annually to a U.S. citizen whose outstanding accomplishments, character, and stature in the civilian community draw wholesome comparison to the qualities for which West Point strives, in keeping with its motto: “Duty, Honor, Country.” The Thayer Award is the highest honor currently bestowed upon a non-graduate by WPAOG. BG Lori L. Robinson ’94 to Serve as 80th Commandant

The U.S. Army has announced BG Lori L. (Turbak) Robinson ’94 to serve as the 80th Commandant of the U.S. Corps of Cadets. BG Robinson is a native of Paterson, NJ. She has served in a variety of aviation assignments both stateside and overseas to include four combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. She has led Soldiers in both command and staff positions from the company through Brigade Task Force level. Robinson is currently the 2nd Infantry Division ROK-US Combined Division Deputy Commanding General for Support.

Firsties Celebrate 100th Night

The Class of 2023 celebrated their 100th Night banquet and welcomed the evening’s guest speaker, retired GEN Austin S. (Scott) Miller ’83. Miller is a former Delta Force commander who served as the final commander of NATO's Resolute Support Mission and U.S. Forces - Afghanistan from 2018 to 2021, and he will be awarded WPAOG’s Distinguished Graduate Award in May. The banquet was followed by the 100th Night Show titled, “Trunk of Memories,” where classmates performed a musical that allowed Firsties to reminisce about memorable times during their tenure at the Academy. Dr. Gibson served in the U.S. House of Representatives, commanded 2BCT, 82nd Airborne Division in Haiti, served four combat tours in Iraq, was part of the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, and taught in the USMA Department of Social Sciences (SOSH) from 1995-98. In this episode, Dr. Gibson discusses with SOSH Department Head, COL Heidi Demarest ’01, the current state of civil-military relations, the controversial use of social media as a means for free speech, and the future for military nonpartisan norms.
